Year Four

Hello and welcome to Year 4!

Our whole Year 4 team is here to support your child’s learning and development this year.

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome your child and yourselves to Year Four.

The Year four team are: Ms Masud, Ms Ullah, Ms Bonsor, Ms Refa, Ms Fahmida, Ms Khaleda, Ms Shelia and Ms Sumi. Our support staff work with groups and work one-to-one with individual children during lessons. Other members of staff will also be running interventions to support the children’s learning.

There will be lots of exciting learning taking place this year in all areas of the curriculum. Some of the things your child will be learning about in English this year will include: reading and writing myths, different types of poetry, fairy tales, fantasy stories and, in non-fiction- newspaper reports, information booklets and explanations. In maths, they will: develop their counting and place value skills; be able to answer calculations both mentally and on paper; begin to explore fractions; measure; and apply different strategies to solve problems. There will also be a specific focus on children knowing their timestables. In the afternoons, your child will take part in: science, art, DT, history, geography, computing, music, PE, RE and PSHE lessons. A range of exciting trips have been planned throughout the year to support and extend your child’s learning.

Reading

Reading is very important. Your child will have regular reading sessions in class, but they would also benefit greatly from further reading at home too. Each child will take home a levelled class book and a library book (of their choice) each week.  Each child will have a reading diary to record their reading achievements- please check and sign this regularly. Please make sure that book bags (with their books inside) are brought into school each day. Our library slot is on a Wednesday afternoon.

Homework

Each week your child will receive a list of spellings (spelling tests each Friday), maths and English homework, which will allow them to consolidate the learning that has taken place in class. Maths homework may be set on My Maths when appropriate. Please check the newsletter each week for homework details. Homework will be given out on a Friday and needs to be returned by the following Wednesday.

PE

Year Four will have PE on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday afternoons.

Please make sure that your child brings in a full PE kit at the beginning of each half term. The PE kits will be kept in school and sent home at the end of each half term to be washed. Each item in the PE kit needs to be named.

For PE, each child should wear dark coloured shorts/leggings/tracksuit bottoms and a white T-shirt. PE bags are available from the school uniform shop and are priced at £2.00. Children need to wear trainers or pumps for outdoor PE.

In the spring term, the children will be going swimming on a Thursday at Mile End Stadium. They will need a towel, swimming costume/trunks, goggles and a swimming hat.

Dates for the diary

There will be a year 4 meeting on Wednesday 11th September at 9.20am and again at 3.00pm where you can find out more about the year 4 curriculum.

4U’s class assembly will be at 9.30 am on Tuesday 26th November

4M’s class assembly will be at 9.30am on Tuesday 3rd December

Please remember …

  • to tell the office or your child’s teacher if someone other than yourself will be collecting your child at the end of the day.
  • to write your child’s name in their coat, uniform and PE kit
  • not to use your mobile phones within school or in the school playground
  • to check the school’s website for the weekly newsletter (paper copies are available in the school office)
  • to download the school app- to keep up to date with the latest news (ourschoolsapp)

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to speak to the Year 4 team at the end of the school day.

Thank you for all your support
